Location and Mobile Ads

Location and Mobile Ads

What has location and Google Mobile Ads have in common? Mobile search is directly related to the searcher's local environment and Google is attempting to tap into that market. Why? Google seems to think that consumers are giving the signal to a new realm of local search for businesses.

With the increase uses of mobile units, location is beginning to play a significant role in the ways people are utilizing search. And that means opportunities for businesses.

For instance, mobile applications like Foursquare and Gowalla, allow you to create a connection with the merchant with a single tap of your phone. It can tell your friends where you are, while telling services like Foursquare and Gowalla what places people are frequenting. Though Foursquare and Gowalla lead the way, Twitter has just added the features and Facebook is expected to follow very soon.

Will Google begin to place a greater emphasis on location than it had in the past? It looks that way. An example of this is Google's recent emphasis of tailoring search suggestions to user location.

Location ad targeting by business can find great benefits from users sharing their location information. So what are some things businesses need to go to get in on mobile advertising.

1. Determine which applications fit your business needs
2. Verify your business at Google's Local Business Center
3. Keep up on Google changes regarding local search
4. Keep an eye on Twitter and Facebook about any geo-related tidbits
5. And, when you use social media be sure to use your business location in updates-when appropriate.

I see some benefits to brick and mortar businesses that are online. But I wonder about businesses that are online only? I guess, it's a pro-active wait and see type of approach to see how this will play out.
