Why? If you have an Nook, Kindle, Ipad, or Iphone you can begin reading an ebook immediately after download. Personally, I would like something bigger 3X5, however, whatever you choose, you will get greater access to millions of books, newspapers and magazines without stepping into a store.
I've noticed that Barnes and Noble offers Textbooks for the Nook, which I believe can be bought or rented. Now that is nice. I remember standing in long lines waiting for my turn to enter the bookstore just before classes were about to start. What a pain.
What do these devices mean for the book industry. It means that traditional book retailers will need to begin to adapt to an e-book centric industry. Some in the industry feel that it will be a matter of several years before the business begins to make a major shift.
The disadvantages are really personal preferences I suppose. For instance, I always loved the smell of a new book. That would be gone with an electronic eReader. And placing that book that I had bought into a personal library, no matter how small the library might be, gave me personal satisfaction. I guess I can for go the ego tripping.
I do see advantages for the student, and that would be having all their textbooks on a Nook, Kindle, Mac or PC. The student's backpack would be lighter. I would have loved to have had a lighter backpack when I was walking across campus. That load of books on my back was definitely uncomfortable.
People who travel. I have seen people with a Nook or Kindle, reading to their heart's content while waiting for their plane to be called. A definite boredom killer.
I guess with any technology there are pros and cons, but it won't stop it from moving forward, will it. It will be interesting to see how the new technology will affect the business of books and people. Will the old go completely away? Maybe, maybe not. But the new technology will have a strong place in the marketplace.
